The One Habit the Rich Share—and Why Reading Alone Isn't Enough

Reading creates knowledge. Application, accountability and disciplined action turn that knowledge into results.

Ask most people what separates the wealthy from everyone else and you will hear the usual answers: luck, connections, inheritance or timing.

The research tells a different story.

When author Tom Corley studied 233 financially successful people—177 of them self-made millionaires—one habit stood out. Eighty-eight percent said they read for 30 minutes or more every day.

They were not simply reading for entertainment. They read to learn: biographies of successful people, history, self-improvement and business. Sixty-three percent also listened to educational audiobooks during their commute, turning otherwise unused time into development time.

Warren Buffett has described reading hundreds of pages a day. His late business partner Charlie Munger often spoke about the people who rise in life as “learning machines”—people committed to going to bed a little wiser than when they woke up.

The pattern is clear: people who grow consistently never stop taking in new ideas.

The part nobody talks about

Here is what I have learned over more than 25 years of coaching leaders across New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and the Philippines:

Reading is the starting point. It is not the finish line.

Most business owners I meet have a shelf of leadership books. Many have read the classics. Some have listened to dozens of audiobooks in the car. Yet their business can look almost exactly the same as it did three years earlier.

Why? Because information without application is entertainment.

The wealthy do not just consume ideas. They test them, adapt them and build them into how they operate. They turn a chapter into a decision, a decision into a habit, and a habit into a system. That is where the return on reading comes from.

The gap between knowing and doing is where many leaders get stuck—and it is exactly the gap I built my business to close.

Why I write the books—and coach from them

I have written more than twenty business books, including Rome Built in a Day and Unlock Your Potential. Each was created for one purpose: to give busy leaders practical, field-tested thinking they can use on Monday morning.

But I have never believed a book on its own is enough. Every book can sit at the centre of a structured coaching and training programme. The book provides the thinking. The coaching helps make it stick.

It is the habit of the wealthy with the missing piece added: guidance that helps turn reading into results.

What this looks like for a leader

The leaders who get the most from this approach are usually curious, know they have reached a ceiling and are tired of collecting good ideas that never quite make it into the business.

When reading is paired with coaching, the shift becomes noticeable. Meetings get sharper. Decisions are made faster and with greater confidence. Teams understand where they are heading and why. The leader stops being the bottleneck and becomes the person who sets direction.

That is what being a learning machine looks like inside a business.

Start where successful people start—then go further

If the research tells us anything, it is that growth is a daily discipline, not a one-off event. Thirty minutes a day of the right reading compounds. The right reading, applied with a coach beside you, can compound faster.
